About This Primary Resource

This is a detailed 9 page document giving ideas for a variety of fun maths games involving dice. The ideas / activities are all ideal for use in Key Stage 1.

Dice are versatile pieces of equipment that open the door to lots of fun. They can be small enough to carry anywhere and used on their own or with the addition of everyday objects or even the contents of your pockets they can keep children enthralled for a long time.

Lots of games rely on chance and this is important when building confidence, especially in mixed ability groups. Some of the games, e.g. the number bonds games rely on a measure of skill but encouraging children to work as a group eg counting together helps to build confidence.

Very young children need to practice the skill of recognising the quantity of dots without counting them as well as understanding the concept of number - counting accurately and recognising numerals before they can begin to calculate with numbers.
