Eid ul Fitr resources
This year the festival of Eid ul Fitr (aka ‘Eid’) fell on the 30th or 31st of August. For those of you not familiar with Eid it is a celebration which marks the end of Ramadan (the Islamic month of fasting). Eid always falls on the first day of the tenth month of the Islamic calendar (known as Shawwāl).
The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar and so is 11 to 12 days shorter than the solar year (months being when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted). This means that Shawwāl fluctuates from year to year. Unfortunately for many of you this year’s festival has fallen on the edge of the school holidays. This doesn’t mean it should be ignored though. Don’t forget to discuss it in your setting and where possible to ask the children how they celebrated it. Eid is a show of joy after the fasting of Ramadan and it carries with it many positive messages particularly in relation to peace, spirituality and brotherhood. It is a time that Muslims spend contemplating and thanking God for their blessings.
We have a couple of Eid Mubarak posters on the site but here are some links to other resources you might find useful:
