The Big Light Project

Yesterday I spent the evening uploading several lesson plans designed by Recolight as part of their Big Light Project. Recolight is a not–for-profit organisation that funds the recycling of energy-saving light bulbs. They’ve put together a series of educational materials and lesson plans called ‘The Big Light Project’ as part of their initiative to educate children on the importance of recycling and the need for better, more efficient lighting. They’ve kindly offered to share their resources through our site although I would definitely recommend checking out the big light project website as well, as it has lots of useful information on it.

These materials are probably more relevant to KS1 and above rather than KS1 and the foundation stage / phase but nevertheless I thought they would still be of interest to our visitor. They feature fun projects tailored to the UK curriculum which are designed to educate and engage children. There are 10 lesson plans in total on the following themes:

1. Explore the history of the light bulb and the role Thomas Edison played in its creation.
2. Pupils discover how a light bulb works by trying to make their own bulb from simple materials.
3. Explore how the light bulb has changed our lives and consider what life would be like without it.
4. Consider how lighting was used in the past and how modern lighting does a better job.
5.  Review and discuss all the different types of lighting. Understand that some objects are not light sources
6. Consider all of the uses of light we have in the world today.
7. Find out about the different light bulbs, their main features and functions.
8. Celebrate the importance of light by designing a light feature.
9.  Consider the importance of recycling and how saving the planet starts at home.
10. Write a poetic tribute to the light bulb.

There’s also a rather nice poster to accompany the series. The lesson plans have already been used in over 2,000 schools across the UK, so I would highly recommend checking them out.
