Factors to consider when choosing books to promote positive images
1) What roles do the male and females play, are males always dominant, leading characters? E.g. boys active and positive, girls passive and following.
2) In what jobs are men and women portrayed, are they classic stereotypes? E.g. man as a doctor, woman as a nurse; man as a bus driver, woman as a teacher?
3) What activities are boys and girls involved in, are they limited in their expectations? E.g. boys with construction kits and mending things; girls in domestic roles.
4) Are the books aimed at one particular sex? E.g. The boy’s book of…… The girl’s book of……..
5) Are girls portrayed as weaker or less significant?
6) Is the language used discriminatory? E.g. policeman, fireman, girls giggle, boys laugh
7) Does the storyline focus on whether the female is pretty or ugly?
8) Does the storyline focus on a woman’s need for a child?
9) Does the storyline focus on the strength and courage of the male?
10) Are single men and women portrayed as in need of a partner?
11) Is male power over females the theme of the story?
12) Are men shown in caring roles, and is this described as important work? E.g. caring for children, the elderly, animals.
13) Are boys’ and girls’ possessions described in equal terms? E.g. a boy’s racing bike, a girl’s shopping bike.
14) Are males and females always dressed in a stereotypical way?
15) Does the book portray positively men / boys enjoying dressing up for a special event? E.g. for a wedding or party.
Remember that small children’s access to books is in your control, and you should choose them carefully. There is no need to throw everything out, add to your collection and provide a fair range.
