National Storytelling Week 2013

26th January to 2nd February is National Storytelling Week 2013. Young children use the spoken word to express how they feel, make sense of the world, tell us what they have been doing and so on. Part of their language development involves learning to tell a story (narrative skill).

Learning and repeating nursery rhymes, familiar stories and fairytales has long been a brilliant way for children to learn language skills – not only reading but spoken language and sentence structure – and they are also a model for how to build their own stories.

Becky Shanks’ work on narrative therapy in Speech & Language Therapy also went further to demonstrate how every story has a beginning,  a middle and an end and that learning to tell stories is a valuable part of encouraging language development with language delayed children. With all this in mind, how about giving this a try:

The Childminding Shop Ltd (online early years specialist retailer) stocks three different Storytelling Bags which are designed to encourage storytelling and roleplaying for EYFS and Key Stage 1. Each includes a set of EVA foam masks and props for one of three old favourite stories:  Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. It’s also Panto season… why not have a go?
