The Importance of Maths Games at KS1

Incorporating Maths into the KS1 timetable is no easy task. With so many aspects and areas of maths to build in, it’s easy for a particular subject to get left behind. From telling the time to using number facts, Key Stage 1 Maths lessons will vary greatly in content.

Maths should keep children motivated and engaged right from the start, so it’s important that vital elements and props are used to keep young children entertained. A popular way of doing this is by including interactive maths games into both the school and home environment. Aids such as flashcards, tape measures and dominoes are both a teacher and parent’s best friend. They offer a visual and exciting alternative to the everyday worksheet as well as being accessible and easy to use.

Merging maths games into Key Stage 1 can play to each child’s learning style as well as making the subject more engaging. Including fun activities in a fun maths mental workout can increase interaction between children and result in better learning in a fun and relaxed environment.

Choosing which game you want to play should be influenced by the objective you are trying to complete. Games should of course be relatively short and simple, but this doesn’t mean you can’t alternate the mathematical rule that you would like to apply. Games should also take all abilities into account so that less-able children still have a chance of winning so that they too can stay motivated.
